Autonomous reads the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous message as preparing the market for 10 to 15 percent rate declines at the January 2027 renewals, while Aon puts industry capital at USD 800 billion. Fitch expects terms and conditions to loosen further as property cat softens.
Reinsurance News reported on 1 October that research firm Autonomous reads the message from the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous as preparation for rate declines of 10 to 15 percent at the January 2027 renewals. If that proves correct, Autonomous argues, it would complete the reversal of the hard market, at least on pricing. Aon estimates total industry capital at USD 800 billion, up 40 percent from the 2022 trough, and Gallagher Re says it would take well over USD 100 billion of excess losses to bring some stability. The Marsh Re property-cat index had already signalled declines of about 16 percent through 2026.
Alternative capital keeps arriving. Aon puts sidecar vehicles at about USD 23 billion at mid-year, roughly 50 percent more than at the end of 2024, while casualty-focused vehicles remain small at little more than USD 2 billion according to Autonomous. Investor interest in ceded-reinsurance ReShare vehicles is growing even as rates fall, which Autonomous calls a little counter-intuitive.
Fitch, in a note covered on 26 August, expects property cat to soften further in 2027 absent a large H2 2026 loss. At mid-year, lower layers were flat or down by single digits, while remote loss-free layers fell by double digits and US loss-free property fell up to 25 percent. Fitch expects broader event definitions, extended hours clauses, higher limits and more aggregate covers in 2027, although higher attachment points and retentions generally held. Reinsurers, per Autonomous, would rather give up price than structure. Hannover Re’s Sven Althoff agrees that cuts should decelerate into 1/1/2027, says softening outside property cat is much smaller and depends on each client’s loss experience, and notes that loss-hit clients still see increases.
Power Re’s specialist focus on Group Life and Personal Accident in Latin America sits outside the property-cat price cycle, but surplus capital tends to migrate to adjacent lines, and frequency-type terms are where discipline erodes first. Our response is unchanged: price each treaty to its expected loss and cost of capital, hold attachment and wording standards, and decline business whose terms no longer compensate the risk. A market that gives away price before structure rewards the reinsurer that reads its wordings as carefully as its rates.
